Autumn 1 Week 8 Arts Week

Autumn 1 Week 8 – Arts Week

This week has been a little different to others because it has been Arts Week so the children have been involved in various art projects, have welcomed visitors (such as a poet and Back Chat Brass) and visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, to name just a few.

As part of their art sewing topic, the children first did a double page spread on a local artist, Haley Mills-Styles, who specialises in embroidery artwork and her work has even been displayed at Sunny Bank Mills Art Gallery! Check out the children’s brilliant double page spreads which has facts and interesting information all about the artist. We then looked at different sketching techniques such as ‘stippling’ and ‘hatching’ and experimented with these using various HB sketching pencils. The children did observational drawings of cakes or treats, using the different techniques they had previously learnt and produced some fantastic sketches – again, have a look through the pictures we have downloaded – we certainly have some gifted artists in Y6! We practised different types of stitch: running, back stitch, cross stitch and then created a sketch of a treat/cake on material and stitched patterns on top of the sketch. Some of us found it a little tricky but everyone gave it their best shot and no one gave up – brilliant resilience, Y6!

On Tuesday, Y6 went on a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. In the morning, 6F were involved in a workshop where a member of staff took us to some of the sculptures around the park, and gave us lots of interesting facts about the sculpture and the artist who had created it. We then had the chance to sketch but in strange and wonderful ways such as: sketching on top of our heads so we couldn’t see what we were drawing, using various shapes and tones to shade and we even tried holding our pencils but at the very end so it was hard to control the outcome. We also had a chance to use clay to create our own sculptures – some fantastic end products. After lunch, we then had chance to explore more of the park and discover more sculptures. 6B also did the same but they did the walk in the morning and the workshop in the afternoon. Well done to all Y6 – your behaviour was excellent and your enthusiasm was great to see!

To end our Arts Week, we were entertained by Back Chat Brass, we listened to Helen Minshall, another brilliant musician and finished off with a Northen Arts Factory workshop. It has been a great week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed it!
