Welcome back to Year 1 after the half-term holidays. They were straight back into their learning this week with a brand new geography topic. The children started this topic by looking at what the world looks like. They used atlases to identify and name the 7 continents and sang the continent song (I'm sure they would give you a rendition if you asked them!).
In science, the children have started to look at animal groupings and what characteristics certain animals have. This week focused on the warm-blooded animal groups, Birds and Mammals. The children learnt that birds have feathers, a beak, wings and lay eggs whereas mammals have hair/fur, give birth to live babies and females feed their babies milk.
The children are continuing in their phonics groups this term and most children have moved onto learning set 3 sounds. We are having a big focus on reading without using Fred talk out loud so that fluency improves. The children have also learnt how to spell tricky words so, no, go.
In maths, the children are continuing with their addition skills this week before moving onto subtraction. We have focused on adding more and working out addition problems such as 'If Jess has 1 cat and 2 dogs and Ben has 2 cats and 3 dogs, How many animals do they have altogether?'. The children have used concrete resources to support their understanding with these problems.
Because it has been bonfire night this week, the children have been creating chalk firework pictures and writing sentences about bonfire night as part of their challenges during discovery time.
On Monday, we welcomed the road safety team to year 1 who taught the children some of the rules for being safe when they are out and about. The children learnt the green cross code - think, stop, look, listen and talked about ways to keep safe such as always wearing a helmet when riding a scooter or sitting safely in a car seat with a seatbelt on.
How could we forget the trip to Nell Bank?! The children all had an amazing time learning about animal habitats and owls. They had lots of opportunities to play and explore and the staff their were impressed with their prior knowledge & understanding of animals. Please enjoy having a look through the photographs from the trip.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
