Autumn 2 Week 1 3/11/25

Hello!

This week in maths, the children have been developing their understanding of positional language and comparing quantities. They have been describing the position of a bear using terms such as in front, behind, between, in, on and under. The children have also been exploring the concept of quantity by comparing groups of objects, predicting which has more, fewer or an equal number. Using resources such as bears, cups, plates and unifix blocks, they have practised matching objects 1:1 to compare groups and determine whether the quantities are equal.

Next week in Maths, we will be learning about the concept of a whole and how a whole can be made up of parts. The children will explore this idea by recognising a whole object and identifying its parts, such as a whole jigsaw and a piece of jigsaw. They will also look at the number 3 and recognise that its parts could be 1 and 1 and 1, or 2 and 1, using blocks to represent their understanding.

This week in Understanding the World, the children have been learning about Bonfire Night safety and Remembrance Day. We discussed how to stay safe around fireworks and bonfires, including keeping a safe distance, wearing warm clothing and always holding an adult’s hand. The children shared their own experiences and talked about how to enjoy fireworks safely. For Remembrance Day, the children explored why people wear poppies and how this day helps us to remember and thank the brave people who have kept us safe. They took part in creative activities to understand the importance of remembrance and showing respect.

Next week, we will be taking part in both Anti-Bullying Week and Children in Need. To support Anti-Bullying Week, children and staff are invited to wear odd socks to celebrate what makes each of us unique. We will also be joining in Children in Need activities to raise awareness and support children who need our help.

We hope you have a great weekend,

The Reception team
