We have had a fantastic first week back at work.
To begin the week, the children went on a clue hunt to try and find out what their new book was going to be for this half term. The children had to work out the riddle which lead them to the clues. When they had found all 5 clues, they returned to the classroom to have a look at them together. The children then discussed what they thought the book was going to be about and why. They then found out their book was 'A Night at the Frost Fair' by Emma Carroll.
In maths, the children learnt column subtraction. They began practising using dienes, to help them understand the method. After, the children were introduced to the method and were given lots of opportunities to practise.
In history, the children started to learn about the Bronze Age and the changes that occurred during this period of time. The lesson began by looking at a range of artefacts around the room and the children had to decide what they thought the items were made of, what they were used for and who they thought may have used them. They were then introduced to the Amesbury Archer, a Bronze Age skeleton found which taught historians a lot about the Bronze Age. The children then headed outside to see our own 'Amesbury Archer' where they had to look at the artefacts around him to discover who they thought he was, what his job was and what it taught us about the Bronze Age.
In science, the children started their new topic: Animals including humans. The unit began with a lesson on diets, where they looked at the Eatwell Plate and learnt about the 5 food groups. First, the children had to group play food depending on whether they were a: carbohydrate, protein, diary, fat or fruit and veg. After, they created their own balanced meal using what they had learnt.
