Autumn 2 Week 3 17/11/24

Hello!

This week in Reception, the children have been busy exploring shapes and numbers in lots of practical ways. They began by learning to recognise squares and rectangles, using real objects to help them spot the properties of each shape. In number work, the children investigated different ways to make and break apart groups of 3, 4 and 5. Using blocks and watching Numberblocks, they explored how a whole number can be composed of different parts—for example, seeing how 4 can be made from 1 and 3, or 2 and 2. They enjoyed building their own number arrangements and talking about what they noticed in their models. By the end of the week, the children were confidently creating different patterns of 5 and explaining the parts that make up a whole.

Next week in maths, the children will be exploring numbers to 5 in different ways. The children will practise matching quantities to numerals and to the number of fingers shown, helping them to understand what “equal” means. They will begin to recognise numerals to 5 and use flashcards to count out matching amounts. Later in the week, the children will investigate what happens when objects are rearranged, discovering that the quantity stays the same.

This week in understanding the world, the children have been learning all about the Arctic. They began by exploring maps to find where the Arctic is in the world, before looking closely at photos and videos to discover what the Arctic is like and the physical features that make it so unique. The children also learned about the animals that live there and carried out an exciting ice experiment to investigate what ice is and how it changes.

Next week we will learn more about the Arctic, the children will be exploring their local area and the wider world. They will begin by looking at the features of Farsley and then compare it with the Arctic, discussing how the two places are similar and different. The children will also learn about how climate change is affecting the Arctic and the animals that live there, building on what they already know about this unique environment.

Reminders:

-Please encourage your child to practise their lines for the show at home as often as possible so they feel confident and prepared. If your child has a single line, it will be added to their reading record on Friday.

- Please ensure your child has a pair of wellies and waterproofs in school so they are fully prepared for outdoor learning in all weather.

We hope you have a great weekend,

The Reception team
