Spanish

Intent

At Farsley Springbank, our Spanish curriculum inspires children to be courageous, kind and curious learners. We provide a high-quality, engaging and creative language-learning experience that develops a love of Spanish, builds cultural awareness and deepens understanding of the wider world.

Our teaching fosters independence by giving pupils the confidence to express themselves in a new language both in speech and in writing and to take ownership of their progress. Through determination they build fluency, accuracy and resilience as they practise pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar over time.

We encourage curiosity by exploring how language works and how it connects people and cultures. Pupils learn through songs, games and movement, developing joy in language learning and discovery.

Spanish lessons are designed to promote risk-taking, creating safe and supportive spaces where pupils are brave enough to try new words, make mistakes and learn from them.

Through collaboration children work together in conversations, performances and games, building communication skills and learning the value of teamwork in language learning.

A key part of our Spanish curriculum is respect for different cultures, communities and ways of life. By learning another language pupils gain empathy, global awareness and confidence to see themselves as part of a diverse and connected world.

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim for all pupils to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish from authentic sources and to speak with growing confidence, fluency and accuracy. Children learn to express ideas through discussion and questioning, write for different purposes using appropriate grammar and develop an appreciation of Spanish texts that deepen both their language skills and cultural understanding.

Implementation

At Farsley Springbank, Spanish is taught through the Language Angels scheme, providing a lively and engaging approach that helps every child develop confidence and enjoyment in language learning. Lessons combine speaking, listening, reading and writing supported by songs, games and stories that make learning memorable and fun.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, pupils are introduced to Spanish through songs, rhymes and play-based activities. This early exposure builds curiosity and confidence, helping children recognise sounds, words and phrases while developing a positive attitude towards learning new languages.

In Key Stage 2, pupils follow carefully sequenced half-termly units that cover key strands: Speaking and Listening, Songs, Stories and Rhymes, Reading and Writing and Grammar. Learning is revisited and deepened over time, supporting determination and progression in both skill and understanding.

Throughout their lessons, children are encouraged to show independence by practising pronunciation, recalling vocabulary and using Spanish for real communication. Risk-taking is celebrated as pupils experiment with new words and structures, learning that mistakes are a natural and valuable part of the process.

Collaboration is at the heart of learning; children work together in conversations, role-play and songs, developing both teamwork and communication skills. Every lesson promotes respect for Spanish culture and the wider Spanish-speaking world, helping pupils appreciate global diversity and connection.

At home pupils can continue to develop their skills and confidence by accessing songs and games through the Language Angels website and app, supporting continued enjoyment and lifelong curiosity for language learning.
