Maths

This week in maths, the children have been exploring quantities, learning how to compare groups using the language more than, fewer than and equal to.

The children compared different groups of objects, even when the items were different sizes, colours or shapes to understand that it is the quantity that matters - not what the objects look like. Through hands-on activities, they discovered that a group does not have more just because the objects are bigger or brighter. They also worked with a partner to compare sets, explaining who has more, who has fewer and how they know.

Next week in maths

Next week in maths, the children will be exploring numbers up to 5 using practical, hands-on resources. They will be learning about number bonds to 5 using five frames, counters and Numicon to help them see how numbers can be made in different ways. We will also be focusing on one more and one less, first using concrete resources such as cubes, buckets and five frames and then moving on to using number lines. These activities will help children build confidence with counting, understanding quantity and recognising how numbers change.

Understanding The World

This week, the children have been learning about the artist Paul Klee. They explored some of his artwork and discussed what they could see, encouraging them to look closely at colours, shapes, lines and patterns.

The children were supported to comment on artwork, sharing their own thoughts and ideas. They talked about what they liked, what they noticed and how the artwork made them feel. This helped them build confidence in expressing opinions and using simple art vocabulary. Through these discussions, the children developed their understanding that art can be interpreted in different ways and that everyone’s ideas and responses are important.

Next week in Understanding The World

Next week, the children will be learning all about China and Chinese New Year. They will begin by exploring where China is in the world and learning about some of its key features. The children will then listen to and talk about the story of Chinese New Year, helping them to understand why and how the festival is celebrated. They will learn about common Chinese New Year traditions, including celebrations, symbols and special events that take place during this time.

Reminders

Numbots

Numbots is a great way for the children to increase speed and accuracy within maths.  If you wish to use the Numbots platform at home – your child’s login details are on the front of their reading record.

Sound mats

In class the children use sound mats to support their letter formation. You will receive a sound mat in your child’s book bag today.

Outdoor Learning

Children are outside in all weathers. Please ensure your child has an extra pair of socks in school so that they can double up if their wellies are too cold.
