This week in class, we have been continuing our maths learning by comparing capacity and helping the children develop a clearer understanding of the numbers 5, 6 and 7. The children have been learning to recognise these numbers using dice patterns and practical resources. They have been exploring what happens when one more is added to a group. Through songs, stories and hands-on activities, they have been practising counting accurately, spotting patterns and explaining how they know how many objects there are.
Here is a helpful number blocks video for you to watch with your child to support maths: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bmkh2z/numberblocks-series-3-numberblobs?seriesId=b08bzfnh-structural-3-b0bls7vy
This week we have been thinking about rules and why they are important. The children discussed and compared rules that they have at home and rules we have at school. We have also been thinking about helping others and why it is important. We learnt a new song with signs which you might like to listen to together at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ53UQCXJe8
Next week…
In maths, we will be using the terms longer and shorter to describe and compare the length of objects in our classroom. We will also be comparing groups of objects using the vocabulary more, fewer and equal to.
In Art, we will be learning about the artist Paul Klee. The children will look at a variety of his paintings and begin to learn how to critique art. They will share what they can see in the artwork and discuss what they like or dislike about the painting techniques used.
In our No Outsiders lesson, we will be reading the story Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly. This story is a great way to help children understand that it is okay to like different things and that everyone’s preferences are unique. The children will be encouraged to share their likes and dislikes with their peers and to find common ground, helping them to recognise similarities while celebrating differences.
Reminders:
Reception may take part in outdoor learning throughout the week so please ensure your child comes to school with waterproof clothing and a bag of spare clothes.
