Spring 1 Week 1

Spring 1 Week 1

What a lovely first week back we have had!

In reading, the children found out their new book for this half term... The Ancient Egypt Sleepover by Stephen Davies. In our book reveal at the start of the week, the children had to crack the hierogylphic code to find out the title of their book and then had to predict what they thought it might be about based on pictures around the room.

In writing lessons, the children began practising how to use sub-ordinating conjunctions to create longer, more detailed sentences. They did a range of practical activities to do this.

PE was slightly different this week due to bad weather. On Monday, the children did a fitness workout in the classroom, based on activities they had chosen themselves. On Tuesday, the children then completed their first lesson of dance where they learnt and practised counting in 8s.

On Wednesday, it was our Egyptian Day, which was jam packed full of so many fun Egyptian activities. The children began their day by learning all about Egypt and examining different artefacts. As part of their Ancient Egyptian day, the children looked at the Egyptian’s method of writing: hieroglyphics. We learnt all about the Rosetta stone and how this helped archaeologists to crack the Egyptian’s writing code! The children then learnt all about the mummification process in a workshop with Catherine. We then had a go at writing their names using ink on real papyrus paper. Year 3 also looked at some artefacts such as canopic jars, where the Egyptians stored the dead’s internal body parts and a very bizarre tool that was used to pull the brains out through the nose! We finished the day learning about Egyptian weapons and the Pharaoh’s job during wars. What a fantastic way to start out new history topic, we can’t wait to learn even more!
