What another jam packed week it has been for Year 6 this week! We have certainly fit a lot into our days and the children have been working harder than ever.
6F have headed off to Ripon to visit the Police and Prison Museum, spending the day immersing themselves in our Crime and Punishment topics. Children spent time touring the cells, learning about transportation and role-playing a real-life case from Victorian Britain. There were some fierce poachers and some even fiercer police officers amongst us! The afternoon was then spent in the Courthouse Museum where children got to take on the role of lawyers, judges, criminals, witnesses and jurors, taking part in a mock trial which followed the exact same structure of the trials that had happened in that very same courtroom in real life. It was a fantastic experience to enhance our learning.
Whilst 6F were off in Ripon, 6B were immersing themselves in our DT topic focussing on vegan cooking. They spent the day researching all about veganism, discussing the reasons some people choose to follow a vegan diet, the research behind both health and environmental issues relating to this lifestyle and looking at famous chef's who have included vegan menus within their restaurants. It was then time to discuss the substitutions vegans make within their diet and we taste tested a range of vegan products, comparing them to their non-vegan counterparts. There were certainly mixed reviews with soya-based chocolate pudding and vegan chocolate buttons rating much, much higher than plant-based ham!
6F will carry out their DT day next Thursday when 6B go to Ripon for their Crime and Punishment day!
Alongside these two exciting days, children have also been continuing with our ratio work in maths where we have learnt about scale factors, similar shapes and applying this new learning to a range of tricky problems. We are continuing to see excellent progress in our arithmetic work as well, so keep it up Year 6.
In English, the book 'Holes' by Louis Sachar has been our main focus. We have been retrieving and inferring information from the text whilst also using the story as inspiration for our writing. We have been using a formal register to complain to the evil warden about their horrendous treatment of the campers at Camp Green Lake. Both Miss Ferguson and Miss Brayshay agree that this is the best piece of writing Year 6 have produced all year and should be super proud of all their efforts.
We have also continued with gymnastics and tag rugby in PE, learnt some classroom vocabulary in Spanish, discussed how to keep safe in our local area in PSHE and continued working hard on their Week 1 and 2 spellings based on the -ible / -ibly suffix.
I'm sure you'll all agree Year 6 deserve a rest this weekend after such a busy week!
