Spring 1 Week 3

What a busy week Year 1 have had.

In English, we have been writing sentences in the past tense to form a short diary entry. We have been impressed with how the children are attempting to apply their handwriting to their writing within writing lessons. This is tricky when they are just starting out because they have so much to think about.

In maths, we have been continuing thinking about the number line to 20. We have learnt what estimating is and have been finding the mid-point on a blank number line to help us locate where other numbers should go. We learnt that estimates do not need to be exact but a good guess based on what other information we have. We also recapped the greater than, less than and equal to symbols (<  >  =) and applied these to numbers within 20.

In history, we learned about our next explorer - Captain James Cook and discovered that he sailed all 5 oceans and explored 6 continents but that he did not make it to Antarctica. We found out that he sailed on the HMS Endeavour and that he has a special statue to commemorate him in Whitby.

In PE, we continued learning Flamenco steps to the count of 8. We worked together in groups to perform a short sequence in time to the music.

1W went outside this week to complete their Andy Goldsworthy inspired nature sculptures (and had lots of fun in the rain, sand and mud!!!) and we worked on creating lines in our sketchbooks using different media such as pencils, pens, pastels and charcoal.
