Spring 2 13/02/26

Maths
This week, the children have been exploring numbers up to 5 using practical, hands-on resources. They have been learning about number bonds to 5 using five frames, counters and Numicon, helping them to see how numbers can be made in different ways. The children have also been focusing on one more and one less, first using concrete resources such as cubes, buckets and five frames, and then moving on to using number lines. These activities have helped the children to build confidence with counting, understanding quantity and recognising how numbers change.

When the children return from the holidays, they will be developing their understanding of time and number. They will practise ordering and sequencing events using everyday time language such as before, after and next, helping them to talk confidently about their daily routines. The children will continue to practise counting aloud and revisit key counting principles. They will explore numbers beyond 5, using the ‘5 and a bit’ structure to understand the numbers 6, 7 and 8. The children will also investigate the one more, one less pattern and begin to order numbers between 1 and 10, working together to build confidence and deepen their understanding of how numbers are connected.

Understanding the World
This week, the children have been learning all about China and the Lunar New Year. They have begun by exploring where China is in the world and learning about some of its key features. The children have listened to and talked about the story of the Lunar New Year, helping them to understand why and how the festival is celebrated. They have also learned about common Lunar New Year traditions, including celebrations, symbols and special events that take place during this time.

After the school holidays, the children will be learning about life cycles and how living things change over time. They will explore what a life cycle is and observe how changes happen as humans and animals grow. The children will learn the main stages of the human life cycle and understand that humans change as they get older. They will also study the life cycles of animals, including frogs and chickens, learning about the different stages and noticing observable changes. Through these activities, the children will discover that some animals come from eggs and develop their skills in describing what they see.
