Maths
This week the children have been developing their understanding of time, ordering and sequencing events and talking about their daily routines. They have been completing a range of challenges in a given amount of time, including collecting beanbags, star jumps and skips with the rope. You could create some time challenges at home, for instance how many toys can you put away in one minute or how many seconds does it take to put your pyjamas on?
The children have also been exploring numbers beyond 5, using the ‘5 and a bit’ structure to understand numbers 6, 7 and 8. They have been investigating one more and one less and using this knowledge to help them to order numbers between 1 and 10.

Understanding the World
This week we have welcomed a very exciting addition to our reception classroom: an incubator with eight eggs! The children began the week by writing predictions about what might be inside the eggs. There were some very interesting ideas! And then on Tuesday afternoon the first chick hatched out. Since then, two more have hatched. The children are enjoying our new class pets which we will look after until next Friday when they will return to the farm.
We have been learning all about life cycles this week. We have learnt about the different stages of a human life then we also looked at a frog’s life cycle and a chicken’s life cycle. On Thursday 12th March we will be visiting Swithens Farm where the children will get to see and feed the animals.
Next week
Next week in maths, the children will be focusing on comparison. They will further develop the skill of comparing, noticing attributes and differences and similarities, focusing on where numbers to 8 are in relation to each other. They will begin to develop their own ‘mental number line’, as well as the ability to understand which number is more than or less than another.
Next week we will start our new Talk 4 Writing unit, based on the text Jasper’s Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth. We will become familiar with the story through reading, ordering events and times in the story, learning actions to retell the story and we will use phonic knowledge to write parts of the story.
Reminders
Numbots
Well done to those who have been practising their maths skills on Numbots. Don’t forget, we will be giving certificates for great effort and achievement. This programme is a great way for the children to increase speed and accuracy within maths. If you wish to use the Numbots platform at home – your child’s login details are on the front of their reading record.
Outdoor Learning
Children are outside in all weathers. Please ensure your child has an extra pair of socks in school so that they can double up if their wellies are too cold.
Spare clothes
In school, your child must have a bag with spare clothes.
