Special Visitors: Our Classroom Chicks!
The chicks have been happily living in their cage and have kept us thoroughly entertained with their playful antics and their very loud cheeping! Earlier this week, the children were given the special opportunity to gently hold a chick, which was a wonderful experience for everyone. We have also enjoyed creating chick paintings and taking part in lots of other chick-themed creative activities. We have now said goodbye as the chicks head back to the farm, but they have certainly left us with some very special memories.
Maths
In Maths this week, the children have been learning to recognise and name 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres, cuboids, cylinders, pyramids and cones. Alongside this, we have been strengthening our number knowledge by subitising amounts to 6, ordering numbers and Numberblocks to 8 and representing 8 as ‘5 and 3 more’. The children have also practised placing numbers 1–8 in order, explaining how to order quantities to 10, identifying which numbers are ‘more than’ others and noticing when numbers increase or decrease.
You can support this learning at home by looking for 3D shapes in everyday objects, practising ordering numbers to 10, asking your child what is “one more” or “one less” than a given number, and encouraging them to show different ways to make 8 using their fingers or small objects.
Next week, we will continue our learning about 3D shapes by exploring the 2D shapes that can be found within them, helping the children to see how shapes are connected. Alongside this, we will be developing our conceptual subitising skills by describing parts within a whole set, visualising different arrangements and using gestures to explain how numbers are made up. The children will also be investigating different ways to make 7 using two parts and will practise using their fingers to show and describe 7 as ‘5 and 2 more’, building their confidence in understanding numbers as made up of smaller amounts.
Talk for Writing
This week we have introduced the story Jasper’s Beanstalk in our new Talk 4 Writing unit. The children have been reading and enjoying the story, they have come up with actions to help them to retell the story.
Next week, we will be creating story maps to help retell the story and the children will be writing the story using their phonic knowledge.
