Hello!
It was so lovely to be able to share our learning with you this week in our reception assembly. Thank you for coming and seeing what we have been learning. The children have worked hard to learn the story and song and to create lots of lovely artwork and super writing.
This week we have been learning about toys and how they have changed over time. The children started the week by talking about their favourite toys. Thank you for all the photos you have sent in of your child’s favourite toy. There were some lovely discussions about what things are made from, how they are played with and why they are special. The children have compared toys using different criteria and they have looked at and played with old toys.
The children enjoyed their trip to Abbey House museum. They took part in a workshop where they found out a range of old toys, what they are made from and how they are used. They were even able to play with some of these. They explored the galleries, looking downstairs to see what a Victorian town would have been like, and looking upstairs to explore more old toys.
Next week we will continue to learn about old and new toys. We will making more comparisons of old and new toys, looking at what materials the toys are made from and how old toys were played with. We will learn how to play some traditional games, including hopscotch, jacks and skipping games. The children will also create their own toys, using box-modelling techniques.
This week in maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of the composition of 5. We have used the song ‘5 Little Kittens’ and the fingers up and fingers down approach to embed this learning. We have also used our knowledge of smaller numbers to create larger numbers from ‘5 and a bit’. We have used the Hungarian Dice pattern (like a number 5 dice pattern) and other resources to support this learning.
In maths next week we will be exploring how 10 can be composed. We will be looking at how 10 can be made from 2 parts and developing the children’s ability to subitise the parts in structured arrangements such as double die frames and 10 frames. The children will be encouraged to recognise 10 in the ‘5 and bit’ structure. They will also use their fingers, using the fingers up and down approach to show the composition of 10.
Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child brings a sun hat to school, has their water bottle and has sun cream applied before school. Sun cream that you apply once which lasts for 8 hours is ideal as then children don’t have to reapply throughout the day. If your child does need to bring sun cream into school, we will guide them to apply this independently.
Have a lovely weekend!
