Summer 1 Week 4 16.5.25

Hello!

This week we have continued to learn about toys and how they have changed over time. We have looked at older toys, sorting them into groups and ordering them using a timeline. The children have been creating their own toys, using box-modelling techniques. The children have playing with old toys and learning how to play traditional games such as skipping, clapping games, hopscotch, jacks and Ludo.

Next week in Understanding the World, we will be learning about plants. The children will learn about the different parts of plants, look at similarities and differences and will learn how to look after plants to keep them healthy. They will also be hunting for different plants in the school garden. Perhaps you might like to spot some plants over the weekend. We will be using the vocabulary roots, stem, leaves, flower, seeds, grow, germinate, light, air, water, nutrients and space.

This week in maths we have been reviewing the composition of numbers 6-9 using the ‘5 and a bit’ structure. We have been exploring how 10 can be made using the double dice frame (2, 5 dice patterns), the fingers up fingers down approach (using 10 fingers, how many are up and how many down) and ten frames (a rectangles split into 2 rows and 5 columns). You might like to create some collections of 10 things at home. How will you arrange your 10 objects? Another activity is to make a fruit kebab using 2 different fruits. How many of each fruit are on your kebab?

Next week in maths we will be comparing numbers up to 10, considering where numbers are in relation to each other. Through practical activities and games, the children will reason about numbers and think carefully about which is more or less. They will use linear number tracks to play games that encourage them to compare numbers that are far apart, near and next to each other. (For example, 10 is a lot more than 2 but 5 is only 1 more than 4.)

Coconut ordering is a fun game to play (choose up to 10) where your child will need to order the numbers from smallest to largest. Here is a link: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/coconut-ordering

Thank you for your continued support in ensuring that your child has sun cream on, has a full water bottle and brings a sun hat to school each day.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Staff
