Summer 1 Week 5 23.5.25

Hello!

We have reached the end of another half term! The children have all made super progress this over the past 5 weeks and are getting ready for their next step into Year 1 as we move into the last half-term of their reception year.

In understanding the world, we have had lots of fun learning about plants. We have learnt that a plant is a living organism and have learnt the names of the parts of a plant using the vocab roots, stem, leaves, flower. We have identified a wide range of plants in the school garden. We have been learning about what plants need to grow and the children have planted some sunflower seeds which they will be taking home. It would be lovely to see some updates on Tapestry about how their sunflowers are growing.

Our topic after the half-term is all about minibeasts. Perhaps over the holidays you might like to find minibeasts in your garden or at the park. You may even have books about minibeasts or you might like to go to the library and see what you can find.

In Maths we have been focusing on ordinality: considering where numbers to 10 are in relation to each other. Through practical activities and games, the children have been reasoning about numbers and thinking carefully about which is more or less. They have used linear number tracks to play games that encourage them to compare numbers that are far apart, near and next to each other.

In Maths after the holidays, the children will learn how to use a rekenrek. They will learn how to subitise beads on a rekenrek. This will help to develop their skills in recognising how numbers are structured and will also build a foundation for learning covered in Year 1. Here is a link to an interactive rekenrek which you may like to have a look at at home together:

Thank you again for your continued support. Please feel free to continue to send any photos or videos of your child’s activities at home, as they really help to build a full picture of your child’s progress or experiences.

Have a great half term!

The Reception Team
