What support will be available for my child as they transition between classes or settings?

Our aim is to ensure every child feels prepared, supported, and confident as they take their next steps. To help pupils with SEN be prepared for a new school year we:

  • ask both the current teacher, the next year’s teacher, the parent, the child and where required the SENCO to attend a final meeting of the year when the pupil’s SEN is discussed
  • schedule lessons with the incoming teacher towards the end of the summer term
  • Have a transition day or additional transition visits the ‘new class’

We also offer a comprehensive transition programme to support children as they move to their next phase of education. This includes:

  • Bespoke transition packages, such as working with the Virtual School
  • Additional visits to new settings to build familiarity and confidence
  • Transition meetings with parents/carers and receiving schools
  • Preparation activities tailored to pupils’ needs
  • Enhanced support for children with complex needs
  • A Year 6 transition group for identified pupils, running over six weeks
