Spring 2 Week 4

Spring 2 Week 4

It has been another busy week in Y6! The children have been learning about British innovators in history, visiting the brilliant Yorkshire Wildlife Park and predicting what will happen next in our class novel, War of the Worlds.

In maths this week, Y6 were looking at equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages and finding out percentages of amounts. We have now completed this unit and we'll be tackling area, perimeter and volume over the next few weeks.

We have begun our new writing unit all about imperative verbs and have been looking at double consonant spellings over the week. Y6 have been completeing grammar questions in their writing and are really getting to grips with different grammatical terms - well done, Y6! We are really enjoying our class novel War of the Worlds and some of us have even listened to Jeff Wayne's musical version - spooky!

We have continued our keyboard lessons with Mrs. Love and are learning new songs in singing sessions. We are continuing our art sessions, looking at the work of Morag Mysercough and will be  creating our own positive posters using a range of different fonts and captions.

In PE we are continuing our unit on street dance and have been enjoying our cricket sessions outside and learning the rules of the game.

As part of our topic on evolution and inheritance, Year 6 visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. We spent our morning exploring all the animal enclosures and were lucky to see lots of the animals at their most active. The children watched the polar bears having a roam and a swim, saw the tigers patrolling their territory and saw the wallabies and their babies up close in their enclosure. We then spent time with one of the park's education specialists - Alex - who showed us how some of the park's animals had evolved over time by using real fur, teeth and skulls of the residents! The children used the knowledge they gained to make up their own evolved animal, eventually playing a game of survival of the fittest! We even had time to run off some steam in the jungle adventure playground before heading back to school. It was a fantastic day and a great way to consolidate our learning around this top attraction!
