This week in maths, we have been learning about odd and even numbers. To support this, we continued using Numberblocks, where the children explored different features and sorted them into groups such as ‘odd blocks’ and ‘even tops. Throughout the week, we also revisited the concept of doubles, with the children practising how to recognise and talk about numbers made from two equal parts. Towards the end of the week, the children explored patterns of doubles, investigating how numbers can be made by combining two equal parts. They really enjoyed spotting patterns and beginning to make connections in their learning. The following episode of Numberblocks features the Even Tops and Odd Blocks. Next week in maths, we will be continuing to build our understanding of number. The children will be learning about number bonds to 5 and beginning to explore number bonds to 10, helping them to see how numbers can be combined in different ways.
We will also revisit doubles, as well as odd and even numbers, using practical activities to deepen the children’s understanding.
Alongside this, the children will begin to solve simple problems using 10 frames, supporting them to count, represent numbers, and explain their thinking.
This week in understanding the world, we have been thinking about ‘Our Wonderful World’. The children have been exploring the changes in the seasons and sharing what they enjoy about each one. We also talked about signs of new life and discussed ways that we can help to look after our world. As part of our discussions, we explored what the word ‘special’ means and reflected on the people and things that are special to us. We also completed a No Outsiders lesson, where we read The Family Book by Todd Parr and talked about how all families are different. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and learning to celebrate these differences.
Next week in Understanding the World, we will be learning about how Christians celebrate Easter. The children will explore different Easter traditions from around the world and begin to understand why this celebration is important to many people. We will also be looking at some Easter foods, including hot cross buns, and the children will have the opportunity to take part in baking Easter nests, which they always enjoy! As part of our personal development, we will also be completing a consent lesson using the story Don’t Hug Doug, helping the children to understand personal space and the importance of asking for permission.
