Hello!
In maths this week the children have been developing their subitising skills by recognising quantities without counting, using patterns such as those on dice to help them spot doubles. They are learning when they can subitise and when counting is more helpful, building a deeper understanding of number. The children have also been practising their visualising skills by looking at structured arrangements and describing what they see, helping them understand how numbers can be broken down and combined.
Here is a link to a game. Choose the counting up to 5 numbers option and encourage your child to subitise rather than count eg look at the objects and say how many knowing for instance that 3 and 2 make 5: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/underwater-counting
We have continued our work on the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, retelling the story with actions and singing a song about the story. The children have enjoyed crafting, painting, creating story maps and making their own storybooks. We are looking forward to sharing our learning with you in our assembly next Wednesday at 9.15am.
In maths next week the children will be exploring different ways to make 5, using their fingers to help them understand how numbers can be split into parts, even when some are hidden. They will also build on their knowledge of numbers 6 to 9 by recognising them as “5 and a bit,” using familiar resources such as fingers, dice patterns and 10-frames. Through these activities, the children will strengthen their understanding of how numbers are made and develop confidence in recognising and working with number patterns.
In Understanding the World, we will be learning about plants. The children will learn how to recognise a plant and parts of a plant, including the vocabulary roots, stem, leaves and flower. They will learn what a plant needs to grow well and what germination means. If you have planted any seeds at home, it would be lovely to see some pictures on Tapestry or via email. Anything plant-related would be great to share.
Messages:
We are looking forward to our reception assembly where we will be sharing with you our recent learning based upon the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This will be on Wednesday 6th May at 9.15am in the school hall.
Please ensure that your child has a sun hat and sun cream applied when it is sunny. The 8 hour suncream is great as this lasts all day. However, your child can bring in suncream to top themselves up if they require. We recommend a rollerball type sun cream as opposed to a spray for ease of application.
Thank you for your support helping your child to access Numbots. This program really helps to speed up mental recall. Please continue to use this at home. We will be giving certificates out this term.
Have a lovely weekend!
The Reception Team
