Year 4's planting and growing

For the last couple of months Year 4 have been planting hundreds of seeds, bulbs and tubers, all of the edible kind. They have sown tomatoes, carrots, celery, beetroot, lettuce, chard, cucumbers, onions, garlic, potatoes, peas, beans, spinach, chillis, pak choi and kholrabi! They have now started to pick out seedlings, pot plants on into bigger pots and plant some of the hardier vegetable plants out into the garden. Already we are seeing pods form on some of the bean and pea plants! Along the way they are learning about how growing their own fruit and vegetables can contribute to healthy, sustainable living such as eating seasonally, cutting down on air miles, not using pesticides and using less plastic. The exciting outcome of all this growing will be right at the end of our school year when Year 4 will plan, harvest and cook a delicious meal from all their school grown produce.
